Pricing can change. Always confirm directly on provider sites before making a final decision.

This benchmark uses publicly listed pricing from provider websites where available. If a provider does not publish full pricing, it is marked as quote-required.

This page is informational only and is not tax, legal, or accounting advice.

Methodology

  1. Collected pricing from official provider pages.
  2. Normalized each provider into a comparable fee formula.
  3. Ran shared cost scenarios to estimate first-year cost.
  4. Marked non-public pricing as Not publicly listed instead of estimating.

Normalized Scenario Assumptions

To make providers comparable, the scenarios below use these assumptions:

  • First-year totals include one-time setup/activation fees when publicly stated.
  • Taxes (GST/HST/PPT/RST) are excluded because they vary by province and provider tax treatment.
  • Transaction processor fees (for example, card/direct-debit processor fees) are excluded.
  • For per-claim fixed-fee models, claim-count assumptions are explicit in each scenario.

Cost Scenarios (Estimated First-Year Cost)

Scenario A: Solo owner, $1,000 annual claims, 8 claims

Frontier HSA $800.00

Setup Fee Effect (Year 1 vs Year 2+)

Some providers publish one-time onboarding fees.

Team C ($10,000 claims, 3 employees)

  • Olympia: Year 1 $1,354.00; Year 2+ $1,019.00
  • Coastal: Year 1 $750.00; Year 2+ $700.00

Team D ($30,000 claims, 10 employees)

  • Olympia: Year 1 $3,234.00; Year 2+ $2,899.00
  • Coastal: Year 1 $2,150.00; Year 2+ $2,100.00

Key Findings

  1. The biggest pricing drivers are claim percentage and fixed annual/setup fees.
  2. For small teams, setup and per-employee fees materially affect year-one total cost.
  3. Some providers publish full formulas; others require quotes, which reduces pre-purchase transparency.
  4. For fixed-fee-per-claim models, total cost depends on both total claims dollars and number of claim transactions.
  5. At higher claim volumes, lower pure-percentage models (for example, Coastal at 7%) can be cheaper than a flat 8% model on raw fee totals.

Notes on Data Quality

  • This benchmark only uses publicly visible pricing at verification time.
  • Provider pricing pages and terms can change at any time.
  • Some providers bundle optional insurance or add-ons; this benchmark focuses on base HSA administration pricing where possible.
