Travel Medical Insurance
Travel medical insurance premiums may be eligible through your HSA. Trip cancellation, interruption, and baggage coverage are not eligible. Policies that combine medical and non-medical coverage need a closer check.
What Qualifies
When the policy meets CRA requirements, eligible expenses include:
- Premiums you paid for single-trip, annual, or snowbird travel medical insurance for emergency medical and hospital care away from home
- Travel medical premiums you paid for your spouse or common-law partner and dependants who live with you
- Taxes charged on an eligible travel medical premium
What Does Not Qualify
- Non-medical travel coverage, such as trip cancellation, interruption, baggage, flight delays, rental car damage, or accidental death and dismemberment benefits
- Credit card annual fees, even when the card includes travel medical coverage
- Premiums paid by your employer that were not included in your taxable income
- Premiums you already deducted as a business expense
Have a Package Policy?
A policy that combines medical coverage with cancellation or baggage coverage may not qualify, even if the receipt lists a medical portion separately. The policy as a whole must meet the CRA's private health services plan requirements. Ask your insurer to confirm whether it qualifies before claiming it.
What You Need to Claim
- A receipt or policy confirmation showing the insurer, the people covered, the coverage dates, and the premium paid
- The policy summary or wording showing what the insurance covers
Only claim the amount you paid that has not already been reimbursed. If your HSA reimburses the premium, do not also claim it on your personal tax return.
