Comparing Frontier HSA and Kibono

Kibono and Frontier are both pay-per-claim Health Spending Accounts with no setup fee and no annual fee. The difference is how the claim fee is built:

  • Kibono: $2.25 plus 5.25% on every claim
  • Frontier: 8% of each approved claim, with no fixed part

We checked Kibono's pricing page and homepage on November 6, 2026. Both providers charge applicable taxes on top, so compare the final invoice, not only the admin fee.

When each fee is lower

Because Kibono adds a fixed $2.25 to every claim, claim size decides which fee is lower:

  • On a claim under about $82, Frontier's 8% is lower.
  • On a claim over about $82, Kibono's $2.25 + 5.25% is lower.

Prescriptions, small pharmacy receipts, and contact lens refills are often under that line. Dental work, glasses, and a block of physio visits are usually over it.

Claim (before tax) Frontier (8%) Kibono ($2.25 + 5.25%)
$40 prescription $3.20 $4.35
$120 massage $9.60 $8.55
$450 pair of glasses $36.00 $25.88
$1,200 dental crown $96.00 $65.25

A yearly example

A small business submits 10 claims a year adding up to $2,500:

  • Frontier: 8% of $2,500 = $200
  • Kibono: 10 x $2.25 + 5.25% of $2,500 = $22.50 + $131.25 = $153.75

A team that submits 40 small claims adding up to $2,000 sees the opposite:

  • Frontier: 8% of $2,000 = $160
  • Kibono: 40 x $2.25 + 5.25% of $2,000 = $90 + $105 = $195

Kibono also lists payment processing fees on what you pay it: $0.30 + 3.5% by credit card, or $1.50 + 1.5% by direct debit. Those are not in the examples above.

Claim timing and funding

Kibono's homepage says claims are reviewed in 24 hours or less, and paid out in 24 hours or monthly depending on the employer's account type. Employers fund it monthly or prepaid.

Frontier says most approved claims are reimbursed within 24 hours by EFT. There is no deposit: the business funds each claim after it is approved.

Who each provider fits

Kibono's eligibility checklist lists salaried employees with T4 income, and non-related employees making up 50% or more of the team. If you are an owner-only corporation, or a family business, confirm with Kibono that you qualify before you compare prices.

Kibono may be a better fit for a team with arm's-length employees whose claims are mostly larger receipts, like dental and glasses.

Frontier may be a better fit for incorporated owners and small teams, for frequent small claims, and if you want one flat percentage with no processing fees on top.
